Bill Flanagan – Hammered Dulcimer

New album “Sanctuary!”

New album “Sanctuary!”

I’m please to release my third album “Sanctuary,” currently available as a physical CD (plus digital download) or just as a digital download. This album opens with three solo hammered dulcimer arrangements: “Hallelujah” (Leonard Cohen), “I Won’t Give Up” (Jason Mraz), and “Going to California” (Led Zeppelin). Next is “Building the Perfect Clock,” an extraordinary tune by Evan Carawan to which I’ve added bass accompaniment. After that is my gentle solo hammered dulcimer arrangement of “Tomorrow’s Song” by my favorite Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds. Then into “Caspian Lake” (Ken Kolodner) accompanied by two cellos, “The New Land” (Otis Tomas) accompanied by bowed and plucked upright bass, and the timeless “Canon in D” (Johann Pachelbel) accompanied by bowed bass, cello, and viola. The album closes with two ambient pieces: “Fyrsta” (Ólafur Arnalds) is a reflective minimalist arpeggio-based composition with a gorgeous accompaniment by violas and cello. The last piece on the album is the epic “Untitled #3” (Sigur Rós), built around a 5-chord progression with a hypnotic repeated arpeggio played here on hammered dulcimer. The piece gradually builds in tempo and intensity as waves of cellos gradually move the piece towards its crescendo, followed by a plaintive denouement.
